Practical guidance for organisations in the United Kingdom that want to measure emissions and take rapid action with solar energy.
Achieving net zero is no longer just a slogan. Across the United Kingdom, businesses face growing expectations from customers investors and regulators to measure and reduce carbon emissions. Calculating your carbon footprint is the essential first step. You cannot manage what you have not measured.
This article explains what a business carbon footprint is how to calculate it and why solar energy is one of the quickest and most cost effective ways to reduce it.
What is a business carbon footprint
A business carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by your organisation. It includes emissions from onsite fuel use purchased electricity and activity in your wider value chain. Footprints are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent CO₂e so that different greenhouse gases can be compared using a single metric.
To make measurement and reporting easier emissions are grouped into three categories known as scopes under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Understanding Scope 1 Scope 2 and Scope 3
Scope 1 means direct emissions from sources your organisation owns or controls. Examples include gas boilers onsite and company vehicles that burn diesel or petrol.
Scope 2 means indirect emissions from purchased electricity heat or steam. When your business uses grid electricity the emissions associated with generating that electricity are classed as Scope 2.
Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions across your value chain. Examples include business travel employee commuting the manufacture of purchased goods and waste disposal. Scope 3 is usually the largest and most complex category to measure because it includes activities outside your direct control.
For most organisations the fastest route to measurable reductions is Scope 2 because electricity consumption is straightforward to quantify and can be reduced quickly by generating renewable energy onsite.
Step by step how to calculate your business carbon footprint
Step one Collect data
Start by gathering accurate energy data. Useful records include:
- Electricity bills for the last twelve months
- Gas or other fuel invoices
- Vehicle mileage records for any company fleet
- Estimates or invoices for business travel and waste disposal where relevant
The more precise your data the more reliable your calculation will be. Most organisations begin with the past year to smooth seasonal variation.
Step two Convert energy use into CO₂e
Translate consumption into emissions using recognised conversion factors. The United Kingdom Government publishes greenhouse gas conversion factors each year and these are widely used for corporate reporting.
Step three Identify your highest sources of emissions
Once you have calculated emissions for each source identify which activities contribute the most. For many organisations electricity is a major contributor especially if operations involve lighting HVAC motors or manufacturing equipment.
Step four Set reduction targets
Set clear measurable targets to create focus and accountability. Examples might include reducing Scope 2 emissions by thirty percent in year one or achieving net zero electricity consumption within three years.
Where solar energy creates rapid carbon reduction
If electricity shows up as a large portion of your footprint installing solar panels on your building is a high impact response. Solar directly reduces Scope 2 emissions because it replaces electricity that would otherwise be drawn from the grid.
Each kilowatt hour of solar generated onsite is a kilowatt hour that does not produce emissions from fossil fuel generation. Solar delivers immediate reductions in CO₂e and improves energy resilience and predictability of energy costs.
