If your business is considering installing solar panels, one of the first questions you are likely to ask is: how much does commercial solar cost?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer.

Every commercial solar project is different, and the overall cost depends on factors such as the size of the installation, available roof space, electricity usage, roof condition, electrical requirements and the type of solar system needed.

However, there is an important alternative to consider if the upfront cost of purchasing a solar system is a concern: a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

At Sunpower Services, we help businesses explore the potential of solar through PPA arrangements, providing an opportunity for eligible businesses to benefit from solar-generated electricity without having to purchase the entire solar installation upfront.

Here is a handful of projects we have worked on, demonstrating the different types of properties and solar installations that can benefit from renewable energy from Swanley Park, to CS Horticulture.

What Does Commercial Solar Cost?

The cost of commercial solar can vary considerably from one property to another.

A solar installation needs to be designed around the individual building and its energy requirements, rather than simply installing a standard number of panels.

Some of the factors that can affect the cost of a commercial solar installation include:

  • The size of the solar PV system
  • The amount of available roof space
  • Roof orientation
  • Roof construction and condition
  • Shading from surrounding buildings or trees
  • The property’s electrical infrastructure
  • The number and type of inverters required
  • Installation requirements
  • Access to the property
  • Your business’s electricity consumption

A larger solar system will generally require more equipment and installation work. However, the most suitable system depends on what the property and business can accommodate.

This is why a professional site assessment is an important first step.

Could You Benefit From Solar Without Paying the Full Cost Upfront?

For some businesses, the potential benefits of solar are clear, but paying for a commercial solar installation outright may not be the preferred option.

This is where a Solar PPA can be particularly attractive.

Under a Solar PPA, the solar provider typically arranges the installation and maintenance of the solar PV system. The business then purchases the electricity generated by the solar panels under the terms of the agreement.

This means an eligible business can potentially benefit from solar-generated electricity without having to fund the full cost of purchasing and installing the system itself.

For businesses that would rather keep capital available for other priorities, this can be a significant advantage.

Why Do Commercial Businesses Choose Solar?

There are several reasons why businesses are considering commercial solar.

Reduce Reliance on Grid Electricity

Generating electricity on site means your business can potentially use more renewable electricity produced at its own premises, reducing its reliance on electricity purchased from the grid.

Make Use of Available Roof Space

Large warehouses, factories and other commercial buildings often have substantial areas of roof space.

Where the roof is suitable, solar panels can turn this otherwise unused space into an opportunity to generate electricity.

Support Sustainability Goals

Solar can help businesses reduce their reliance on conventional electricity generation and support wider environmental and sustainability objectives.

For businesses with carbon reduction targets, renewable energy can form an important part of their overall strategy.

Potentially Avoid a Large Capital Outlay

Perhaps one of the biggest attractions of a Solar PPA is the potential to benefit from solar without purchasing the system outright.

Rather than committing a significant amount of capital to solar equipment, an eligible business can purchase the electricity generated by the system under a long-term agreement.

Is a Solar PPA Cheaper Than Buying Solar?

It is important not to assume that one option will always be cheaper than the other.

Buying solar outright means your business makes the initial investment and owns the system. A PPA takes a different approach, with the solar provider typically funding and maintaining the system while the business purchases the electricity generated.

The right option depends on your circumstances, financial priorities and the terms available for your individual project.

However, if avoiding a large upfront investment is important to your business, a PPA can be an extremely attractive way to access commercial solar.

It allows you to consider solar as an ongoing energy solution rather than a large capital expenditure.

What Makes a Property Suitable for a Solar PPA?

Before a PPA can be considered, your property needs to meet certain suitability requirements.

At Sunpower Services, we generally look for:

  • A solid roof construction, such as profile metal cladding
  • More than 20 years of remaining roof life
  • A roof broadly facing south, with south-east to south-west acceptable
  • No or minimal roof protrusions, such as chimneys, flues or ducts
  • No shading from trees or tall surrounding buildings
  • A property situated in England or Wales
  • A property that is not a listed building
  • A property that is not in a conservation area
  • Your business must have control over the ability to install solar panels on the roof
  • A reasonable electricity supply already connected to the building, ideally a minimum of 100 amps, three-phase
  • No other solar panels on the same electricity supply
  • A minimum contract period of 10 years
  • A small amount of suitable internal wall space for wall-mounted inverters
  • Ideally, no roof lights, or roof lights covering no more than approximately 20% of the roof area

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee that a property will be suitable for a Solar PPA. A full assessment is required before a project can proceed.

Why Look at Our Solar Projects?

Every solar installation is different.

The right solution for a horticultural business may be very different from the solution for a warehouse, factory or other commercial property.

By looking at some of the projects we have worked on, you can get a better idea of the different ways solar PV can be incorporated into a property.

From roof-mounted systems to ground-mounted installations, there are a variety of possibilities depending on the building, available space and electricity requirements.

Could Your Business Be Suitable for a Solar PPA?

If you’re interested in commercial solar but don’t want to commit to the upfront cost of purchasing a solar PV system, a Solar PPA could be worth exploring.

For eligible businesses, a PPA can provide a way to benefit from solar-generated electricity while the solar provider takes responsibility for arranging the installation and ongoing maintenance.

It could be a practical way to make use of your commercial property’s available space, generate renewable electricity and support your business’s long-term energy strategy.
