World Environment Day 2024 is the next stage of a global event that was first conceived at the UN General Assembly in 1972 in Sweden. This global phenomenon is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It continues to go from strength-to-strength.

In this blog we will have a look back at the history of the event. Plus we will look at how Sunpower Services works to do our bit to make the world a better and greener place.

Themes and Global Involvement – Predecessors of World Environment Day 2024

As far as movements go, this one is truly a global affair. Apart from a period in the early seventies, when Bangladesh hosted the event several times, the responsibilities have fallen on various countries from all over the world. There are a diverse number of nations to take on the role including:

  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • China
  • the United States of America
  • Pakistan
  • the Ivory Coast
  • Colombia
  • India
  • Angola

Each year there is a new theme, apart from the early seventies again, and the themes have been as diverse as the countries who take part. All aspects have been looked at over the past 52 years, including tackling plastics, recycling, nature, the illegal wildlife trade, lowering the carbon footprint, and green cities.

World Environment Day 2024 has the theme of Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience. The hosts for 2024 are Saudi Arabia. A country well known for its desert landscapes.

Energy Production That Damages the Environment

Fossil fuels are used less and less each year in the UK, with renewable energy playing a more focal part. However, there is still a long way to go until we are free entirely of fossil fuels. Coal use is probably the biggest success story so far, with the use of the black stuff almost being non-existent on the British Isles. Unfortunately, we still have quite a large gas reliance.

Emissions from fossil fuels is at its lowest since the 1950’s. Currently it stands at an average of 160 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt hour (kWh). However, a total of 104 terawatt hours of fossil fuel energy being produced in 2023. Still, this is a drop to the lowest level in over 60 years.

It isn’t just the emissions from use that are an issue. Many oil spills, for example, have happened over the years. With a lot of natural environments and wildlife being adversely affected. These are all factors that should make us want to transition to renewable and clean energy.
